Fluency

What is it and Why is it important?

Fluency is Rate, Accuracy and Expression.  It is defined as freedom from word-identification problems that might hinder comprehension in silent reading or the expression of ideas in oral reading; automaticity. (Harris and Hodges)

What does is mean to be fluent?   The more fluent the reading, the easier the brain is processing what is read.  Disfluent reading is a quiet signal about the amount of work being required of the reader to manage the text. A child that takes a great deal of time to work through a text is a child that is ready to give up on reading.  After all isn't reading about enjoying the process?

Grade Level Expectations (national norms)

1st grade:  60 correct words per minute
2nd grade: 90 correct words per minute
3rd grade: 120 correct words per minute
4th grade: 135 correct words per minute
5th grade: 150 correct words per minute

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How is my child's reading fluency assessed? Q: When is my child's reading fluency assessed?
A: Classroom teachers administer a running record . This is a text that is read out loud for the teacher.  The teacher will time the oral reading for one minute as well as monitor for errors of words. A: The classroom teacher is constantly working on fluency growth as well as observing for fluency progress.  There are however, three assessment times during the school year when fluency is formally assessed by administering a CBM.

Fluency with Text

The ability to translate letters-to-sounds-to-words fluently, effortlessly. LaBerge and Samuels (1974 ) described the fluent reader as "one whose decoding processes are automatic, requiring no conscious attention" Such capacity then enables readers to allocate their attention to the comprehension and meaning of the text.   From:  IDEA

CBM

(Curriculum Based Measurement )

CBM is the method of monitoring student progress through direct, continuous assessment of basic skills.  CBM is used to assess reading fluency skills and comprehension.  CBM is an approved and standardized assessment practice based on over 25 years of scientific research.

Reading Fluency Rates of Growth

The Edformation Normative Performance Tables are calculated using the AIMSweb Pro student database. Below is the Oral Reading Fluency Normative Performance Chart. It displays the oral reading fluency rates (words read correctly in one minute from Edformation’s Standard Reading Assessment Passages) for grades 1-8. The information is presented by percentile rank and by fall, winter, and spring benchmark periods.

In this chart, first grade students reading at the 50th percentile in the Spring of the school year reads approximately 50 WRC per/minute when reading Edformation's AIMSweb Grade 1 Standard Reading Assessment Passages.

This chart also indicates second grade students reading at the 90th percentile in the Winter of the school year read approximately 126 WRC per/minute when reading Edformation's AIMSweb Grade 2 Standard Reading Assessment Passages.

Finally, this chart displays third grade students reading at the 10th percentile in the Fall of the school year read approximately 28 WRC per/minute when reading Edformation's AIMSweb Grade 3 Standard Reading Assessment Passages.
