Using Oral Reading Fluency as a Benchmark Assessment

"Yes, I failed the spelling test. But please note I got 95% in Computers for the spell-check test!"

Fluency Assessment and Fluency Resources

Fluency with Text: The effortless, automatic ability to read words in connected text.

Definition: The ability to translate letters-to-sounds-to-words fluently, effortlessly. LaBerge and Samuels (1974; see References) described the fluent reader as "one whose decoding processes are automatic, requiring no conscious attention" (e.g., Juel, 1991; see References). Such capacity then enables readers to allocate their attention to the comprehension and meaning of the text.   From:  IDEA

CBM (CURRICULUM BASED MEASUREMENT )

CBM is the method of monitoring student progress through direct, continuous assessment of basic skills.  CBM is used to assess reading fluency skills and comprehension.  CBM is an approved and standardized assessment practice based on over 25 years of scientific research.

Reading Fluency Rates of Growth

The Edformation Normative Performance Tables are calculated using the AIMSweb Pro student database. Below is the Oral Reading Fluency Normative Performance Chart. It displays the oral reading fluency rates (words read correctly in one minute from Edformation’s Standard Reading Assessment Passages) for grades 1-8. The information is presented by percentile rank and by fall, winter, and spring benchmark periods.
